Flash - Light Bulbs

Should I laugh or cry? Researchers at the Stony Brook University (NY) have determined that the new "compact fluorescent light" bulbs (CLF’s) have the potential to cause skin burns, skin cell death and cancer (melanoma) from prolonged exposure.
Apparently all the new CFL bulbs are manufactured with a coating that absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation. Unfortunately every bulb the researchers tested had a cracked coating and was emitting harmful UV rays.
The researcher’s recommendation to consumers is to maintain a minimum of 2-feet separation from the light bulb. (Sun screen for indoor use anyone? LOL)
Glad I stockpiled away some of the old incandescent bulbs. I wasn’t aware of this UV issue just preferred the light quality and wanted to avoid mercury contamination in my home if a CFL bulb was broken accidentally.
Thomas Edison is probably chuckling. But government knows better than the free market yes?
