Clancy's bichon friese Buster began to dance around my feet, yapping and peeing like the annoying little pest he usually is. I pushed him away with my foot and grasped Clancy's outstreched hand. "Clancy" I panted, "so good to see you, and your little dog too. I think someone or something followed me here." Clancy turned off the light and pulled me inside.

There are ugly parts in my line of work. I can think of none worse than falling on Clancy while his little dog... was he called ToTo?.... started kissing me

Buster, the dog is Buster....but Toto kept prancing through my brain like a bunny being chased by a border collie.

Alright then, Buster it is.

Images of little sissy-boys, in wide-brimmed hats and thick bangs, with wide collars and cutie jackets and dogs names Buster Brown creep in from the corners of my jelly brain.

Wait, what was that noise in the hall?

Long solid scraping noises along the hall wall punctuated by hard clunks. Made me imagine a suitcase full of dwarves being lugged toward the stairwell.

The memories of my years in the circus overtook my brain like a state cop on a motorcycle running down a rampant speeder. I tried to gather myself together and put the dwarf thought out of my mind. "Quick" Clancy said, "Follow me," and we climbed out the back window onto the fire escape that looked down onto.........

When I looked I saw nothing, yet if I looked sideways I could make it out, grotesque, shabbling, and strangely enough, clutching a MArth Stewart's LIVING magazine. I started laughing, imagining her discussing ways to do a drive-by landscaping.

I mean, think about it. A curve, a speeding champagne SUV, two wheels off the asphalt, and Martha, her bad girl bangs blown straight up from that tight forehead. Her arm reaches out the window, a can of gold spray paint--one shake, two shakes, three shakes--psssssssssssttttttt! Gilt privet.

Or Martha snickering and she had her driver speed past, and saying "Snip here.... like so, and here. Then fold once and make the edges flush like...... this." As they sped away you she managed a 30 second topiary of Mickey Mouse armed with a head band and chapange glass.

When we got to the bottom of the fire escape we looked up and there was Kirby Katarack looking down at us. "Bum leg" he yelled, "sorry to scare you off like that. The Chief wants you down at the station for a statement, seems like this morning they found Betty LaFountaine dead at the 5th Street Drive Thru Chinese WashATeria and Chow Mein joint. She was last seen with Clancy and Buster." It was during the spin cycle thought Clancy, that Betty had disappeared out the door and never came back. He thought it was because he wanted to borrow her Max Azria Mules......or maybe because he was feeding Buster all the Kung Pao Chicken, but she wasn't eating it anyway!

Clancy looked at me in that flirty way of his, a beanstalk with appeal. He said, "Chinatown."
