Unhappy My Other Half

G'day

i have been pondering this term "my other half" as we often here refer to our partner, for some time now, as i never use it myself.i think it is because i do feel complete and balanced within myself, i don't need another half to make up for something thats missing.

what is your view on this term?

Sounds kind of dorky now that you mention it! I don't think, truthfully, that I've ever used this term. Like you, I feel quite complete on my own, thank you.

Liam is right. I don't think I've every refered to anyone in my life that way. I have felt better with some of the men that have been in my life than others but, I have been self supporting so long and feel fine with someone or alone. So, I guess that makes me okay with myself.

I think it depends on your perspective. I don't think that referring to your partner as your other half necessarily means that you are dissatisfied with yourself. I think it can mean that that person brought things into your life that you otherwise might not have. I have on rare occasions referred to my husband as my other half. We are very very different people, but I feel like together, we are stronger.

I have this really great dictionary of word and phrase origins. Unfortunately, it wasn't so great this time when I looked up "my other half" or "my better half."

I may have used that phrase once in a while in the meaning that TaintedEyes described. We have what we call our marriage tatoo that we designed, it consist of two people that create a complete circle. I have one half on my left shoulder blade, and he has the other on his right shoulder blade. I feel that we don't just complete each other; we enhance each other. Separately, we are each a piece of art, but together, the design has more meaning.

To be honest, I often refer to my husband as "that man that I live with" or "the man that always seems to be in my bed" LOL!

When I post enough messages to have my own avatar, I will probably use the complete tatoo design. We get comments from people everywhere we go when it is warm enough to wear tank tops. (I'm really confused about words today - new med is causing it).

The weird thing is my other tatoo. It is an armband around my upper arm that I had done 4 years ago. It's a scallop shell in muted colors with a band of waves both above and below.

Hubby had a job transfer in Sept. (he's Director of Operations in a mall). The new mall's logo is identical to the tatoo on my arm and neither of us knew about it when I got the tatoo! Very strange indeed!

Hmmm, I just might mention that to Gregrr's boss. He has a good sense of humor! If he doesn't I'll just tell his wife on him...
