Here's one from one of my all-time favorite films, and I like this quote because it is so useful...

"It's Chinatown, Jake."

One of my favorites was in "East of Eden" with James Dean. He's talking to his mother, played by Jo Van Fleet (she won an Oscar for her appearance).

He's asking for a loan to pay back his father for the money he lost in a failed agricultural venture, and his mother says, after saying it's funny that he'd be asking her for money to pay back his father, "if you don't think that's funny, maybe you better not go to college."

This always got a big laugh from the college crowd at the art theater. ;-)

I like that one, Lou!

Another one we use is from "Dog Day Afternoon."

"You take your bayonet..."

Oh. Context. Okay. In Chinatown, Jake Gittes is a PI interested in the mysterious death of Mulwray, head of the L.A. Dept. of Water and Power. His investigation (let's call it snooping) leads him to Mulwray's widow, Evelyn, and her father, Noah Cross, a man who is politically powerful. Turns out that Evelyn has a grown daughter whose father is Evelyn's father, Noah Cross. The final scene takes place in Chinatown. Evelyn and Noah are arguing over the daughter on the street, it's night, and Jake and the cops are there. Evelyn takes off in a convertible, her daughter in the passenger seat, one of the cops fires, and a horn sounds. Evelyn has been shot in the eye and her head has fallen forward onto the horn. The daughter is screaming. All arrive at the bloody scene in the middle of the street, and in a horrifying moment, Noah Cross takes the daughter into his arms and pulls her away. Jake--engulfed now in rage and grief--makes a move, but one of the cops hold him back and says, "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." This is the final line of the film, and it is filled with meaning--that power, money, corruption make Jake (and all of us) victims.

Good one, Les! Reminds me of Vincent in Pulp Fiction, saying...

"We should have shotguns for this."

Yes. That's the one where something happens with the wallpaper?

Colin Clive as Dr. Frankenstein: "The neck's broken. The brain is useless. We must find another brain."

Desert Hearts.

Said by a working man, to the heroine (a young sassy lesbian) as she is walking towards her place ... (he's seen one woman just leave after saying the night, and then another drive up and talk with the heroine) ....

<sotto voce> "How you get so much traffic with no equipment ... beats me!"

"Dick Laurent is dead."<p>
A pivitol quote from "Lost Highway." My boss and I occasionally say it to one another, just to evoke the movie, which we've both seen several times. Robert Blake's character is listed simply as "Mystery Man." He's mighty lucky the news hasn't used footage from "Lost Highway" to show Blake when covering his wife's murder!<p>
Here's the best site I could find for <a href="http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Lot/8994/LostHigh.html">Lost Highway</a>. The original studio site was even better, but you can get the jist of the movie here. Also, it appears to be widely available, including on eBay.

I read a cool interview with Robert Blake about Lost Highway...I'll try to find it. The whole whiteface look thing was Blake's idea, and Lynch went along with it. Very strange.

You can only read it as a cached copy...but here 'tis:
